Re-opening, and Climbing the Exponential Curve – Wednesday, June 17th, 2020
Most of the U. S. is “re-opening” just in time for numbers to go back up. Be careful out there, wear masks and keep your distance. Alameda County has decreed we can “open up” this Friday. Watch our Facebook page for the most up-to-date info. Bob will reserve the right to restrict the total numbers in the store and we are insisting that all wear face-coverings. He’s moved a bunch of stuff around, so the place was pretty cluttered the last time I saw it, so watch your step.
DC Comics and Diamond Distribution have modified their “arrangement”, but not by much. Diamond will handle reorders for books and comics through the summer. What hasn’t changed is that DC has decided to break the distribution system that has worked for over 24 years by terminating their agreement with Diamond. They will be distributing through other channels and leaving Marvel and Image and all the others with Diamond. I think they perceived Diamond as vulnerable to a financial collapse, and being in weak position themselves, compared to Marvel, they thought that taking this gamble was not much more risk than they were riding on anyway, so why not “Disrupt” and break things. It’s worked so well in Washington, why not try it in the Comics business, or the “Hollywood Blockbuster Gestation Lab” as I like to call it – or just made up on the fly.
The last time something like this happened, we almost lost Marvel and the rest of the business might have followed them down the drain. We’re still not exactly sure when we will have all our comics next week. THIS week is pretty small, again, and we are STILL (sort of) following Alameda County’s Directive to be closed. Until this Friday, when we will be allowing limited access. This is NOT Back to Normal! This is going to be a risky world until the Doc’s come up with a good drug AND/OR vaccine. We encourage everyone to be careful, make your trip to our store quick and efficient, and reduce your own exposure to ALL public places, including ours.
